How to plan a wedding surprise for the dancefloor: the sax drop at Ellie & Christian's Cottonwood Hotel wedding | Omaha

Only two people in that room knew the saxophone was coming. The bride, and me.
We planned it months out. Ellie had the idea and emailed me about. I just happened to have a saxophone artist that I used to collaborate with, so I hit him up and he was all about it.
Mid-reception I dropped the opening chords of "Dancing Queen," and four bars in, James Cuato sneakily walked into the room, stepped onto the dance floor, and began weaving through guests while playing that unmistakable melody.
Phones shot up. Cheers exploded. The element of surprise hit in the exact way the bride had hoped for.

Ellie and Christian have a lot of personality. And that absolutely came through at their October 4, 2025 wedding at the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel.

We had everyone wave their napkins during the grand entrance. The dessert was a freezer full of Cold Stone Creamery ice cream. And everything came together super smoothly.
Here's why the saxophone suprise worked, in case you want one at yours.
Keep the circle small. Ellie told nobody, including the groom. Every extra person who's in on it is a leak, and the whole payoff is the half-second where the room figures out what's happening.
Pick a song everyone already loves. "Dancing Queen" lands the surprise twice. Once when people place the melody. Then again when the sax appears. A deep cut only lands once.
Time it for a full floor. A surprise act in a half-empty room is a recital. My job was reading when the floor had built enough that the sax poured gas on a fire instead of trying to start one.
Hire someone who works a room. James plays moving through people, not planted next to the booth the whole night. You get crowd interaction, which makes for a fun guest experience.

Commit to the theme all the way down
A theme works when you stop hedging it. Ellie and Christian picked disco and went all in. Disco balls overhead. A disco ball helmet. A disco ball backdrop. Disco ball balloons. And instead of cake, a freezer full of Cold Stone.
One disco ball is decor. Five of them, everywhere you look, is a point of view. That's the line between guests calling it "a nice wedding" and calling it "the disco one." Whatever your thing is, push it into at least one place nobody expects. The headwear. The dessert. The entrance.
Speaking of the entrance. Everyone waved napkins during the grand march. Cost nothing, took one line from me on the mic, and turned a walk-in into a moment.
