Dancefloor highlights from a Great White Ballroom wedding at Tiburon

Quick story about my suit pants. It was June at Tiburon Golf Club, I was hustling back into the clubhouse between the ceremony and cocktail hour, and I spotted a shortcut through the rose bushes. The roses won. A thorn ripped a tear right down my pants, I DJ'd the rest of the night with it, and my tailor later pronounced them dead on arrival. 😂

So the first tip in this guide is free: use the sidewalk.

The rest of the tips are about the stuff that matters, because Tiburon is a venue with one real catch. The outdoor ceremony site sits on the golf course with beautiful views and zero shade, and if your wedding lands in the summer, the sun will test your guests, your gear, and your timeline. We've got a plan for that.

Quick intro, since you're trusting me with advice: I'm Brent, and I founded Alternative Wedding DJs in 2016. I've personally DJ'd 100-plus weddings and planned and organized thousands of events over my years as an event promoter and the owner of House of Loom nightclub. I've obsessively studied the group psychology behind a great party, why people run to or away from a dance floor, and how a room's size and layout can help or hurt the experience.

So we're gonna take the insights my team and I have learned and deliver it to you in the mouth of a very gentle great white shark, so you can skip the rookie mistakes and get the best night, with the least stress, out of your venue.

Dancefloor strategy at Tiburon Golf Club

Every ballroom at Tiburon is named after a shark. The Great White Ballroom is the big one at 4,450 square feet, seating up to 400 with a dance floor. It's the Mako (200 with a dance floor) and the Hammerhead (100 with a dance floor) combined into one room. There's also the smaller Tiger Shark room off Sharks Sports Bar for about 80 dancers' worth of guests.

At Kelly and Andrew's wedding, dinner and dancing were in Great White Ballroom. I set up on the east side of the room against the wall, opposite the windows that look out on the golf course, with the venue's portable wood dance floor laid down right in front of me.

That setup works, and here's why. The room is carpeted, which is great for sound. Carpet soaks up the echo that hard-surfaced rooms throw around, so the music stays clean instead of washing into mush. Then the wood dance floor gives dancers what their knees want. And because the floor sits at the DJ end of the room, the volume naturally falls off toward the back, so grandma and the conversation crowd can post up at the far tables and catch a break from the sound without leaving the party. Seat your dancers at the tables closest to the dance floor and your talkers toward the back, and the room runs itself.

One thing to know: the bar for the night lives in the main lobby, a separate room from the ballroom. People drift out for a drink and don't always drift back. That's not a dealbreaker, but it means your DJ can't coast. Part of my job at Tiburon was actively pulling people back into the room all night, with the right song at the right moment and the occasional well-timed announcement.

You can get married out there too

Tiburon's outdoor ceremony site sits right on the golf course, seats up to 300, and the views hold up in every photo. Now the honest part: there's no shade out there.

Here's how we handled it in June. Guests stayed in the shade near the clubhouse during arrivals, and shortly before the ceremony started, I made an announcement and called everyone over to their seats. Nobody baked through a 30-minute pre-ceremony wait, and the seats filled right on cue.

The heat plan applies to the gear too. I tucked my setup into a small shady spot on the west side near the front, up against the bush and tree line. That kept the equipment out of direct sun (electronics hate a June afternoon in Nebraska), kept me out of the photographer's shots, and still gave me a clear view of the processional. The power is behind the ceremony stage on the opposite side, so we bring long extension cords to bridge the gap. With a speaker on either side of the stage, the sound came out great.

The venue does have a sound system at this site, but when I tested it, I was getting some light snap-crackle-pop type sounds out of their microphone, so I went with my own system. But this was in 2024, so worth checking with the venue if there have been upgrades.

Insider info

Load-in at Tiburon is easy, which your vendors will appreciate. I pulled right up to the entrance and loaded in through the front door. For Kelly and Andrew's wedding I arrived at 2:30 to set up both the ceremony site and the reception room, and that was a comfortable window.

The ballroom has speakers in the ceiling. They can help with background music or mic announcements in a pinch, but we'd only ever use them as a backup to the system we bring. Ceiling speakers are built for ambiance, and no one has danced to a ceiling speaker in the history of weddings.

The events team is a real asset here. Becky is the Special Events Director and Kaylie manages banquets (at the time of writing this), and the venue's reviews mention the banquet staff by name over and over, which is rare. Weddings, food, and the room flip are all handled in-house, so you're coordinating with one team instead of five vendors.

Cocktail hour

Cocktail hour happens in the main lobby, where the main bar for the night is set up. In the summer, guests also spill out onto the walkout deck to catch the sunset over the course.

The one thing to plan for: with the lobby, the deck, and lots of open doors, your guests scatter. At Kelly and Andrew's wedding, we handled the transition into the reception with mic announcements, and I was ready to walk the pockets of people on the deck if the sound didn't reach them. It reached them. But that's the level of detail your DJ should be thinking about at this venue, because a cocktail hour that ends 20 minutes late eats straight into your dance floor time. Kelly and Andrew's night is also a good example of what custom work looks like: we built a two-song edit for her father/daughter dance, with exact start points, a fade, and time for them to rehearse to the final cut before the wedding. That's the kind of moment worth doing right, and this venue gives it a great stage.
